Why I Can’t Wait For WordPress 2.8

The new Beta for WordPress 2.8 was release on may 23rd and with it lots of new features and improvements. I have taken the new WordPress for a spin on a test web server and there are a few anticipated features just waiting to be deployed.

Administrating WordPress Away From Home

One annoyance of WordPress for me is the fact that to really get a great blog going you need to delve deep into the code of WordPress. This can be great if you are on your usual computer with all your favorite tools like “firebug” and “web developer toolbar”. But what happens if you are on someone else’s PC? an internet cafe or a temporary PC? Using FTP or getting into the template are off limits.

This is where the new features in 2.8 come in. You can:

  • Upload Themes from the Admin Panel
  • Edit all the files in a plugin not just the main one!
  • Syntax highlighting for theme and plugin editors

WordPress New Theme Installer

As you can see this is a similar set-up to the plug-in installer and you can search for themes by colours, columns and others

This will certainly allow for more editing on the road with more tools inbuilt into WordPress by default.
