Backup EFS (Encrypting File Certificate) in Windows 7
EFS provides file system level encryption for Windows 7. Access lists and permissions are effective at stopping unathorised access while the OS is running. But EFS can provide security directly to the file by encryption.
Backup Your Key
- Windows will warn your to backup your key when you create an encrypted file
- If you don’t have this type Certificate into the start menu search box and open the first program
- Select Backup Now from the wizard
- Click Next on the first window. Then Tick the boxes to backup all your information
- Type in a password. This will be used if you need to restore the key later (So Remember it!)
- On the next screen choose where to save the file
- Now backup that file to a safe location so you can recover your files incase of a problem
