This doesn’t always work. The problem comes from the miserable software architecture. If you are patient, wait 10mins and defender (or security essentials) eventually starts. When the system is turned on, defender is turned off and performs an internal system scan. After that, it should enable itself. If it doesn’t i.e. if you try to enable it like suggested above, before it is ready with the scan, nothing will happen. When defender or essentials eventually turns on, it first download the latest virus definitions. Just after that, it initiates another scan (no matter if automatic or scheduled scan is turned on or off). During this time, all system resources are used, giving you plenty of time for having some coffees. The whole boot up process until your harddisk is finally silent will take 20 to 30mins, where you can’t do anything. So, be patient. That’s the price you have to pay for free software.
