Five Tips to Speedup and Cleanup your Computer

Do you remember how fast your computer ran when you first got it? If you reading this now your computer is most likely a shadow of its former self.
After a few years of installing software and browsing the internet. Windows has collected a lot of files that are slowing down your computer. But help is at hand, read on to find out how to speed up your computer.

1. Disable Startup applications

In the bottom right of your screen is the system tray. This area is filled with icons of running programs that don’t need your attention but still need to run. These programs are loaded during the boot phase and continue to run, slowing down your PC.

  • Click Start then type msconfig (in XP click Start then Run)
  • Change to the startup tab
  • Untick any unused programs. (Adobe, Google and Apple are common cuplrits)

2. Remove “Startup” start-menu shortcuts

A quick way to start a program during the login phase, is to add a shortcut to the Startup folder in the Start menu.

  • Open the start menu and navigate to the startup folder
  • Right-click and then delete any icons that are not needed

3. Disk Cleanup

Lots of temporary files are saved in Windows. Disk Cleanup is the inbuilt tool to clean up these unused files.

  • Open My Computer
  • Right-click on your Local Disk (C:) or which ever drive you wish to clean and select Properties
  • Click Disk Cleanup and follow the instructions

4. Defrag

During normal operation Windows will store files on you hard disk wherever there is space. As you delete old files space will become available and Windows may save one file in many smaller pieces over the disk. Defrag sorts out all these files and reorders them for faster access.

  • Open My Computer
  • Right-click on your Local Disk (C:) or which ever drive you wish to defrag and select Properties
  • Click the tools tag and the Defragment Now
  • Choose which drive and click Defragment now

5. Disable Unused Services

Services are background processes that run important functions in the operating system. These process however can be irrellevent on some Windows PCs. Don’t have a wireless adaptor? Disable Wiresless Config. Don’t have a printer? Disable the Print Spooler.

  • Please be careful. If you disable the wrong service you computer can break, badly
  • Open the start menu and type services.msc
