How to Backup EFS (Encrypting File System) Certificates
When you encrypt a file or folder in Windows 7 an EFS certificate is created to manage the encryption/decryption. If the file is taken off your computer without the EFS you will no be able to open the file.
Backing up EFS Certificate
- Open the start menu and type in manage certificate open the displayed link
- Choose your certificate and click next
- Choose a Backup Location and enter a password
- Skip the next step; just click next
- You certificate is backed up! Remember the password as you will need this to restore it.
