How to Backup EFS (Encrypting File System) Certificates

When you encrypt a file or folder in Windows 7 an EFS certificate is created to manage the encryption/decryption. If the file is taken off your computer without the EFS you will no be able to open the file.

Backing up EFS Certificate

  • Open the start menu and type in manage certificate open the displayed link
  • Choose your certificate and click next
  • Choose a Backup Location and enter a password
  • Skip the next step; just click next
  • You certificate is backed up! Remeber the password as you will need this to restore it.
