This problem reoccurred after the latest Microsoft update (after I fixed it the last time). I repeated the procedure and it seems to have worked again. Any thoughts on how to avoid this from reoccurring after every new Microsoft update (short of not installing the updates)?

Had this BSOD, ran all the diags such as memtest86 and manufacture hdd scans, turns out it was corrupt HDD – couldn’t run system restore from any source. Turned out that puppy linux did the job and booted from a cd – was able to read and copy the files and then when i restarted windows it ran chkdsk, and although it couldn’t rectify the problems, it started and now is ok.
