How to Fix The Error – An Exchange 2007 server on which an address list service is active cannot be found

While working on an exchange 2007 server recently I ran up against a problem. While trying to save an address book change the following error would appear.

Background

An Exchange 2007 server on which an address list service is active cannot be found.

After some head scratching and some google searching I found a service was not started!

Instructions

open the start menu and click run (In Server 2003 or type in the search box in 2008)

Server 2008 Start Menu

Type in services.msc. Then open the program or click OK
Search for the following service: Microsoft Exchange System Attendant

Microsoft Exchange System Attendant

Start this service
