Ben,

I installed MS Office 2010 to try to get the driver. MS Word allows me to save as a XPS document and to view it in the XPS viewer. However, the XPS printer is not listed in printers and faxes and when I go to add it, Microsoft is still not listed under manufacturers. I tried the Generic driver and Properties, but Microsoft is still not listed there either. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Ben,

Yes, I can select the XPS port, but it just never shows Microsoft under manufacturers. Do you think I need to add more fixes to my XP? I'm on Service Pack 3 (MS Windows XP, Professional).

Thanks again.

Hi Ben,

I've tried every download and still cannot find the XPS driver under manufacturers when I tried to select it. I've even created the Generic driver and tried properties and advanced to select it. It's not listed anywhere! I've worked on this since 4/27/11 and it has now caused havoc on my company since invoices was supposed to be e-mail on 5/01/11. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Ben,

I was referred to your explanation in resolving my problem. I have followed all steps you listed above. If installed the Essential package, as well as the .net framework. I get to the part to select the XPS driver and it is not listed even though I have installed it several times. I also do not have Microsoft listed under Manufacturers when I try to install the XPS driver; thus, my XPS driver is not listed in the Printers and Fax window. I am running Windows XP. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Ben,

I've red and tried your hands-on about how to install and re-install the XPS printer. The reason i needed one in the first place is because most free PDF printers don't allow you to print through a remote session (RDP).

So, i ran into this PC with windows XP but no XPS printer installed.
- I added a new printer, and was not given the option to install a MS XPS printer.
- So i installed a generec/text only printer, and then looked up the driver tab in the settings screen.
however, here i also did not see the XPS printer driver option.

After some digging i discovered that the XPS printer and viewer are incorporated in the MS dotnetfx3.
However, i'm working on a low-bandwith line and do not want to clutter a computer with .NET.

So after some more search i found this website (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=b8dcffdd-e3a5-44cc-8021-7649fd37ffee&displaylang=en), the so called Microsoft XML Paper Specification Essentials Pack

Here a package of 7,5 MB can be downloaded that installs ONLY the printer driver and viewer.

I hope this is useful.

Greetings,

Thanks so much! I've been searching for over a week now and just came upon your site and suggestion for Reinstalling Microsoft XPS Document Writer Printer in WinXP - I had removed the printer thinking it useless some time back. My mistake! Your suggestion worked like a charm. Thanks so much.

I followed you up till you said to go to the printer properties, advanced page and change the driver. I got to the advanced page but you didn't say what to change the driver to or where to get the new driver. I already have a printer called Microsoft XPS Document Writer but when I select it to print the 'xps' files it will not do it.
