Unmountable Boot Volume (STOP 0×000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME)

You may have a failing hard drive. Hit the read link to find out how to fix.

Solution

  • Start the computer with the Windows XP CD or the manufacturers Setup disks
  • Press R when the blue setup window comes up to open the recovery console
Windows xp Setup screen
  • Select the Windows installation and press Enter. Normally there is only one
  • Next enter the administrators password (If there is one set)
recovery console logon
  • Then type “chkdsk /p” without the quotes and hit enter
recovery console chkdsk
  • When that is done type “fixboot” and hit enter, then “Y” and enter at the prompt
  • Then type “exit” and hit enter
  • The system will now reboot into Windows

If All Else Fails

  • If that didn’t work for you, Boot to the recovery console again and:
  • Type “chkdsk /r” then enter
recover console chkdsk
  • When done type “exit” and hit enter.
  • This will take longer to complete as it checks for bad sectors on your hard drive.

The usual cause of this error message is bad blocks on your hard drive or a failing hard drive. BACKUP your data as soon as possible and try a program such as HDtune to test your hard drive.
