Windows 7 Freeze booting “Starting Windows” ACPI

A couple of days ago I had a major problem with Windows 7 starting up. Every time this happened it would get most of the way through the "starting windows" new animated screen and freeze. There was no hard disk activity and no progress.

After searching for a solution on google I found a few forum threads referencing trouble with USB connections. I disconnected all my USB cables and started the computer. It ran perfectly!

After plugging in my connections one by one I found it was my Wireless USB Keyboard/Mouse dongle. I had been using this for a while and thought it was strange. Then I remembered that I had recently enabled USB keyboard and mouse support in the BIOS. This setting disabled the computer booted perfectly.

This problem may be just in the RC build 7100 and can be caused by a few things such as external hard drives. Let me know if you have experianced a similar problem, what build you are using and if you managed to fix it.

Let me know if this helped you! Leave a comment.

i have a few tips that worked for me.

Solving Windows free on startup….(this can happen when even booting from the startup disk, it has nothing to do with any drivers or software related issues) If you have sprung upon this problem after installing a driver, then it is a possibility, but for the majority of people who havent been able to enter windows, this is for you.

Disable ALL LAN Networking Controllers from the BIOS!. Try removing LAN boot from the Boot sequence options.
(Disabling network controllers worked for me.)
Failing to succeed move onto step 4

Disable any special motherboard functions, they may not be compatible with windows 7.
Make a backup of your BIOS settings before tinkering, save a BIOS profile if your motherboard supports it, or reset to defaults if you cant remeber what youve changed.

    Failing upon that….
Try inserting the windows disc and booting from it, if you still get the freeze, it is a BIOS issue, so the fix is in that BIOS somewhere! Youve just got to find it!
Try removing all hard drives and booting, If you windows disc succeeds to boot, and enters a hard drive – driver select window, then your windows disc is most likely fine, meaning the disc is not the source of the problem.
Try plugging in a hard drive used for storage through IDE or sata. One that doesnt have a windows platform installed.
If the freeze stilll occurs when booting from the disc, you can be sure its not a driver related issue.

    I hope this help!

Wow very comprehensive, I had a similar network problem in XP once! Amazing to see old bugs still around. Thanks for contributing

Thank you a million times over! By posting this, you just saved me hours of troubleshooting and hair pulling. I never would have guessed it was a USB 4-port hub that was causing the startup problem.

By the way, what make/model USB dongle were you using? I just ordered a wireless bluetooth dongle, and hope that it does not cause this problem as well.

I had the exact same freezing on the “starting windows” just before the animation. I restarted with my printer usb unplugged and it started fine..

This worked for me also, although it was just one USB device, a portable HDD (Iomega). All I had to do was start Windows with the device switched off. If it’s on when you restart or start up then Windows starting will freeze.
