How to Disable Auto Renewal for Xbox Live
Xbox live is a great service but if you add your credit card it will keep charging it for your package when you renew. You cannot remove your credit card information. But you can tell it to stop auto renewing and then you can revert to Xbox Live Silver or Redeeming codes.
Disable Auto Renew
NOTICE: In some locals such as the UK and Canada; Microsoft have disabled this link. The only way is to call Microsoft directly.
- Login to your Xbox Live account at Xbox.com
- Go to the membership page and click on Membership Level
- Microsoft have hidden a link to change Auto Renew as seen below
- There are a few hoops to jump through, keep clicking next at the bottom of the page and you will get the option to turn it off
Let me know if this helped you! Leave a comment.

a really annoying this microsoft has done now, is that when you hover your mouse over the “automatic renewal” you can’t click on it, it is just normal text, so god knows how you take off auto renewal now.
Same! I found an area of the xbox live website which suggests you need to cancel the auto-renew via the xbox itself – I’ve just tried that and there is no option there either!
It’s a right bloody pain in the arse! I’ve just got off the phone to microsoft who were actually pretty good about it. My subscription was due for renewal on 26/06/2010 and the woman I spoke to said she would turn the auto renewal off. She gave me a reference number so I’ll check again then I guess. As for the credit card details, she said they cannot remove it when there is an active subscription, but once it is finished they can then be removed.
She advised me to use the pre-paid cards in the future as these do not have the option for auto renewal. Since I’m hardly on Live I’m not sure I can be arsed with it. Would rather just play on the PS3 until MS get their act together and make Live free too. Anyway, different rant, different day…
I would kill that idiot who did that stupid option. Why there just can’t be an button where you can press right away.
how do you get onto the membership page?
MS are misleading people, there is no option to turn off auto renewel in the UK. You have to call them. It’s a scam, don’t ever give them your credit card details. Someone should sue there ass.
And someone should teach you how to spell.
